latimes: How much genuine value is there in fancy educational electronics? Don’t let companies or politicians fool you, says columnist Michael Hiltzik. This is a really important and interesting topic right now as corporations control not only our politicians but also our education? Technology in the classroom is important, of course, but it’s quickly getting out of hand and not proving...

In 2008, when the Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl when no one thought they could do it, after being told to remove my boots from nervously tapping too much on the wooden apartment floors and then jumping up on the couch in celebration while continuously phoning my father to scream with excitement, we danced in our Queens neighborhood streets to the local pub that offered drinks on the...

Slowly gaining on my hula hoop goal. Here’s another video diary of my not-at-all intense or focused training to run a mile while hula hooping in 14 minutes or less. It’s not particularly exciting, but it does include MUSIC this time AND (a little) actual editing! I’d noticed that everyone watched the boring first video of me at Toys R Us, and then viewership tapered off greatly...

Los Campesinos - Feb 11
I’m selling a concert ticket. AGAIN.  My parents are visiting the weekend of the Los Campesinos! show at the Echoplex.  :/ After much thought and reflection, I believe that’s the correct emoticon for this situation. So, I’ll be spending that night, as well as Valentine’s Day, with them! Anyway, if anyone wants to go, buy it from me, not from Ticketweb. Feb 11th.  $20. I...

'folk violinist and champion whistler'
Andrew Bird performed a live webcast concert from London last week. The performance was the first of a monthly series taking place in the installation space A Room for London, a riverboat perched on the roof of Queen Elizabeth Hall. The Room for London Vimeo page won’t let me embed the video on Tumblr, but I still like them, in theory.  WATCH & LISTEN HERE.

Wanna meet 20 Korean men smoking cigarettes?
Come to the Griffith Park driving range, of course! Other previous sighting? A HAWK CATCHING A SNAKE FROM A TREE AND FLYING AWAY WITH IT 10 FEET ABOVE OUR HEADS.  Always a good time hitting golf balls.

They Might Be Giants - Saturday Night at UCLA
I have Orchestra seats for tomorrow’s show. They were 35 or 40 bucks. Anyone want to come with me…? I’ve seen them live 20+ times, soooo I can always sell them and it won’t be too much of a loss for me. But it’ll be fun!!

Attempting to set a female world record for running a mile while hula hooping, I bought a hula hoop at Toys R Us, practiced my form in the backyard, went to Elysian Park for stamina training, and uploaded  5 minutes of video documentation. Check it out by clicking here. They get better than this one.  I also exchanged emails with this woman today, who ran a 10k while hooping. Yes, this is what...

What I Didn't Watch
“Extremely Mawkish and Incredibly Annoying” When I saw that Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock were starring together in a movie, I … bleccchh …and just hoped it didn’t involve a scooter gang. Then they introduced a precocious young boy! And thennnn, there go the towers. Throw in the unapologetically maudlin and sappy tearjerker of a too-perfect father’s death story...

Asparagus is really expensive.  Something called ‘breakfast steak’ is not.  With endless free time, it’s really easy to win tickets on the radio.  The Comfort Inn on Sunset smells like sanitizing liquids, but otherwise seems like a surprisingly decent place to stay.  The post office is least crowded on Wednesday afternoons for your necessary moneymaking Ebay sale...

Just saw 'The Artist'
But I liked it better the first time around, when it was called “Singin’ in the Rain.” :) “Well of course we talk. Don’t everybody?”

UPDATE 2:05pm: SOLD!  I’m sick and maybe dying (probably not dying) and I can’t go to this. Let me know if you want my ticket - I can email it to you. It was 25 bucks.  Fred Armisen (Saturday Night Live) and Carrie Brownstein (Wild Flag, Sleater-Kinney) from IFC’s hit original comedy Portlandia are embarking on a unique six city tour bringing the romanticized and dreamy rendering of...

Finally saw "The Way"
I’ve wanted to see it since hearing Emilio & Martin on Fresh Air. Because I like to weep uncontrollably multiple times on a plane next to strangers. When are we walking El Camino de Santiago de Compostela? Seriously. I’m IN.
